ER

Last night I experienced every parent’s nightmare.

In the middle of the night Daniel, who had been sick for a few days, began to cry furiously, suffering from agonizing abdominal pain.  As he continued to moan, curled up like a shrimp, his pain became mine.

The drive to the ER felt achingly slow.  It reminded me of the late autumn night when we rushed our little girl, barely three-day-old, to the same ER.  As it turned out, she suffered from potentially fatal MRSA (antibiotics-resistant staph infection), which necessitated immediate hospitalization and a seemingly endless series of exams.  After one blood test after another, our little warrior’s tiny foot turned into a pin cushion.  Another baby, hospitalized with the same illness at the same time, passed away.  Our daughter survived.

To make a long story short:  Daniel was safely sent home early this morning, after a relatively brief exam by a pediatrician. He now feels a little feverish, but seems to be doing better.  (But don’t fight with your sister, Daniel, please!)  He should recover by the end of the week, assured the doctor.
